Medicine has basically deleted evolutionary pressures from first world human populations. Weak bugmen who couldn't lift a sofa to move it and 300 pound they/thems who collapse under the slightest psychological pressure are huge affronts to Darwin. Even cripples and the catastrophically stupid usually live long enough to continue their blood line and often do.

We are a leader because we are a veritable paradise as a secure superpower with a massive hegemony. People flock to America, and when done right, creates a brain drain by skimming off the top of the world.

But America doesn't foster that type of ambition and manner internally. Once you come to America, you're most valuable as a consumer, and eventually your posterity will become dull cattle or face oblivion. They will chase the next iPhone and be preoccupied by sports and entertainment. There's no real pressure to drive innovation, knowledge, and true technological advancement. The pixels will get smaller and closer together, and that's virtually the extent of scientific advancement.
