I'm brainstorming a fantasy novel.

I want the setting of this fantasy novel to be on a planet whose visible land masses are almost entirely mountainous.

Assuming that I have the no-holds-barred deus ex machina of some cataclysmic magical war which can be positioned at any time in the past -- in broad terms, what would need to happen geologically to justify a world eventually coming to that state?
