I have to take an asbestos class every year and am qualified at the lowest level of training, which is basically how to avoid it. OP, the stuff you inhaled will be in your body for the rest of your life, but your life hasn't necessarily been shortened. You should definitely avoid smoking though. The fibers aren't poisonous at all, the problem with them is they do not dissolve, ever, and your body has little blobs of enzyme that roll around in your lungs dissolving things. When these blobs try to dissolve an asbestos fiber, they rupture and spill their enzyme onto the oxygen transfer membrane and scar it, and then it can't transfer oxygen and co2 anymore. You might have noticed a little stiffness in your lungs the day after, and that's probably the only effect you will ever see. Everyone has asbestos stuck in their lungs, at least a little bit. They still use it in brake and clutch pads so dust from the road will contain asbestos.

Anyway, don't freak out, and for god's sake don't pay a doctor, just be nice to your lungs.
