So I've been thinking about this article for a few weeks now, and I've started to hypothesize that early plant cells lost much of their motility because of the energy advantage photosynthesis gave them. Since plant cells don't have to seek out nutrients as intensively as non-photosynthetic organisms they don't have to move, which over time may have contributed to the formation of plant structures like roots.
