Not saying we shouldn't build space colony.
It's more efficient to develop the technology in Earth orbital space because we need rapid prototyping until we actually CAN have self-sufficient base.
Once we DO have self-sufficiency, Mars isn't actually interesting. Normies are obsessed with it because it's easier to imagine western = desert = Mars, than it is to imagine rotating space habitat linked together in infinite matrix or Moon colonies more luxurious than Mars could be be because the lack of atmosphere and lower gravity make it much easier to use.

There's also plenty of false idea about Mars being easier to farm. You'll need enclosed habitat regardless. Mars don't have unique resources other than its 0.3G gravity and its thin-atmosphere is more of a liability.
