I'd say it's because it's a very popular field. I don't think its a worse degree than any other STEM degree; if you graduate from a good school and have a strong resume, you'll do well in the job market like with any other profession.

People were saying the same thing when I was getting my CS degree about five years ago; but I graduated with a well-paying job offer. I work less hours and get paid a higher salary than my friends who went into finance.

Yeah sorry I'm not intelligent and motivated enough to implement a compiler in my spare time, I guess I wasted all this time on my CS degree by having the audacity to work in my field without being in the top 0.1% of the population with regard to drive and talent.
