It benefits the ones who pay them, and the ones who pay them are the current rulers in our hierarchy. The current hierarchy values capital above all else, and the engine of civilization will be directed towards that goal. It indirectly benefits humanity buy growing the economy but if I had to guess, the direct pursuit of technology and basic research would "benefit humanity" more directly. This has never been the case as long as civilization has existed. As long as hierarchy exists, intelligent people will be sought after by kings and lords to aid their court. It's not good or bad, it just is.
