OP here. Sorry for the bad troll. I absolutely didn't mean to imply literature, arts, music etc are shit. I highly value classical music and read a lot of russian literature. And I wasn't really looking for advice but to find out more if other people had similiar thoughts.

This. Research above anything else. Teaching is something I want to try and see if I'm good at it and to become an actual Professor is just way above my head to even think now. I suppose there are a lot of reseachers who "have to" teach to recieve money from the institution?

But my original point is still to hear if you've thought about changing dreams to solid cash, to put it bluntly.

OP you sound just like me 2 years ago. I'm gonna throw some advice I found most precious during my time of "mental recession".

First of all find out really what's the problem at it's source. You have interest but can't do it. Have you problems focusing, are you distracted by other things while you try to work? Maybe you feel like you want to learn something smart instead of stupid algebra and stupid high school stuff - you wanna be a scientist right away? How important academic way of life is to you? Do you want go to college and learn hard science or become an engineer or just have good general intelligence?

Take one friday or saturday evening and night to study completely the /sci/ guide and what's on it.
https://sites.google.com/site/scienceandmathguide/

There's really so much stuff that it's hard to grasp at it's whole first time you read it. So I suggest you go through those articles there and all the programs and tools listed, there's probably several helpful things conserning your problems and problems you may not have aknowledged so far.

I'll throw some further advice once you answer my questions and clarify your goals and problems. If you don't know where you're going, methods don't mean jack shit.

Hey /sci/,
I don't come here often, but I've been lurking a lot, and it has more or less made me a bit uncomfortable about my "choice" in my major (though to be fair, I've never been a big fan of social sciences). I'm a psychology major and even though I'm focusing on research, I still feel less than legitimate scientists studying in the "hard sciences." I'm actually good at science, like chemistry, biology, and physics and their concepts, but the math always gets me. While I accept that my horrible skills in math are mostly my own fault, my A.P. Chem teacher did warn me that I would have trouble because of Algebra II teacher I had - she would literally spend a period (about an hour) talking about her personal life, and not teaching math. And when she did teach, this dumb kid (who honestly was probably irl trolling) would ask some retarded question, prompting her to fuss at him for a couple of minutes. So, I’ve never been able to make the leap from Algebra to pre-calculus, and by default, calculus. I made a 78 in my pre-calc class, and took algebra III my senior year. I made a 95 in the class, and could finish tests in like ten minutes (making around 90-96 on them). So I took pre-calc my first year of university (I’m a sophomore now), and it was horrible. My proff would explain something to us, and then realize that she had explained it the wrong way, and was forced to explain it again, pretty much confusing us. She also missed about a week and a half of instruction time (over the course of the year), and the drop rate for the class was about 75%. I withdrew, with about ~65 and I really need to take calculus to do any advanced science class. So, how does one become better at mathematical information? I should mention I also went to almost every SI session and stayed there the whole time.
tl;dr Shitty social science major, wanting to be able to study a real science, whose looking for advice on how to be better at math.
Pic only slightly related.

>carl sagan, talking about basic scientific principles, that are constantly misinterpreted.

but remember, it is popsci. it isn't there to be a textbook, it is there to inspire.

anyone recommend some more popsci shows?

My laptop got stolen a few weeks ago so today I picked up a new one. It has a god awful "gateway" wallpaper right now, and I figured if anyone had something I would like it would be /sci.

Would love if it was science/math related, but whatever is fine. In return, Sagan!
