Lots of people have an intuition of what math is, but I haven't had it explained to me properly. Look at a classic:

2 + 2 = 4

Where is the math? The numbers, 2 and 4, are not math. Some people say the = is math, but 4 = 4 is just true, there is nothing being done. Maybe the +, but could just rotate it 45°

2 × 2 = 4

Math is abstract, and therefore cannot be rotated, proving the + is not math. I demand answerd!

In SCIence, a theory is a thoroughly-tested hypothesis that's been proven (or at least not dis-proven) and fits well with other scientific knowledge.

What are the features of those things?
Is there anything "as big" or smooth as SU(2), for example. Or are those things essentially degenerate (e.g. like finite fields, which I see as some collapsed stucture)?
