1054 is the most significant recent one I can think of. Might've been one in the 1500's; can't recall.
But there hasn't been a supernova in our galaxy since the invention of the telescope, and we're long overdue.

>light enough to see at night?
There's already light enough to see at night, you fucking moron.

It'd be very fucking bright, though. The big one in 1054 was bright enough to see in broad daylight for two weeks, and was like a second moon at night.
The coolest part is that we can still see its remnants.

/sci/, I have a great interest in astronomy, particularly cosmology and astrophysics. I've read my share on them, but I still have a few questions concerning what it's like to work in the field:

- ... What is it like to work in the field? Deadass, no website I've visited has supplied much of answer. I know it can vary greatly depending on your specialization, but could anyone provide an example? Doesn't have to be cosmology related, I just want a gist of what an astronomer may find themselves doing. Like, men running frantically around a lab wearing white coats? Sitting alone at a computer? Teaching a class?
- I understand that it's a pretty mathematically rigorous science. I know it requires a deal of physics, but do I need to know any chem, as well? Because fuck chem, man.
- Just to clarify, you basically need a Ph.D to be successful in the field, yeah?

All replies appreciated. I don't care much how limited your knowledge on the subject is, if you have anything to share, please do.
