As a teen I was always a long sleeper, and would try pack in 10 hours a night. As I grew up through high school I would have sleep on the train for 20-40mins and also on the way back. Napping came naturally as I was forced to stay up and do homework. When I first entered university I sunk back into the 10h sleeps, and got really lazy. Now I have picked up polyphasic sleeping, I have adapted to it quite easily from my previous napping experiences.

REM is the sleep that keeps your mind fresh and your body functioning. It is not the 'only' good sleep. Stage 3 and 4 sleep activate the immune system. I would assume people who do not have a core nap and only do 6x20min have a low immune response, and thus they could have hundreds of rampaging viruses and diseases in their body without them knowing, because the symptoms caused by 'fixing' these diseases do not appear. They assume they are healthy and thus REM is the only worthy sleep. I plan on keeping my core sleep, so that I have atleast 1 phase of deep sleep.
I am playing around with things like binaural beats to induce longer lasting deep sleep in my core cycle.
