What is the yearly outline of a PhD in science/engineering? For example, in my country PhDs are generally 4-year programs that go more or less like this:

1st year: coursework + research
2nd year: coursework + research (with mid-term exam by the end of second year)
3rd year: 6 months to 1 year abroad doing research
4th year: finishing projects, thesis writing and post-doc hunting

I'm specifically asking about programs in theoretical physics or/and theoretical electrical engineering (stuff that does not require experiments).

How do I decline a previously (although informally) accepted PhD offer? I have found some helpful threads and articles on the internet about this, but my case has an extra factor. The potential adviser (whose offer I am declining) is a main collaborator in a current project and collaborates with my current advisor (I'm in a Masters program) in many other projects.

Any advice on how to write a good letter?

Society could be structured to push people into more interesting pursuits, but I think that you overestimate the intelligence and drive of the average human both in history and today. I doubt that the majority of the non-slave class would have ever been scientists or philosophers, and I doubt that the majority of the non-almost-slave class today would ever be someone interesting even though there's more opportunity than ever. Doing math or science is hard work and requires a legitimate desire to find interesting ideas which isn't something that's easy to train.

how do you guys think about nudity? I thought most medfags are super desensitized but is that really true? Especially if youre performing a physical exam of some sort on someone underaged/attractive I find it hard to believe you wouldn't feel at all weird.

Maybe it's because I'm an amerilard and nudity is super taboo here compared to europe.

is there any point in lives that don't contribute to physics? I honestly don't see any reason for everyone that doesn't preform a role necessary for the advancement of physics to live. Can we just gas them and move on to the next stage of human evolution?
