So my chem professor just sent us an email:

"The Food for Thought questions are not graded -- just a way to call on good brains.

Food for Thought #1:

I hope that you can say with confidence "I accept on the basis of experimental evidence that all materials in the world are composed of atoms." What experimental evidence would you show to a friend who is not ready to make this statement?

Restriction: You may not use the words electron, proton, or neutron in your answer."

Are you man enough /sci/?

How do you study math? I've never really ad to study until this year and finals are coming up so this is new territory.

Thanks. My grades aren't what you would call stellar. 3.8 GPA more or less with honors boost. No matter, though. Thanks for all of this /sci/. I'll make a big discussion thread on something interesting soon in return for the advice. Pic est related.

How crazy am I?

Also, any pointers or tips?

Could be wrong, but I always saw it as a general principle describing that a closed system will break down and die, and that in order to reverse this you need a continual addition of energy (creating an open system).

The metaphor I think is best is cleaning your room. Without putting in extra effort (energy) into cleaning it, somehow it seems to get dirty on its own. Basically, it takes more energy to maintain the order of the system known as your bedroom than it takes for it to be disorderly.

That's as best as I can say. Could be wrong, I'll admit I have no authority to say anything for certain, just passing interest in such matters. Hope that helps, though.

I remember when it was nothing but Carl Sagan threads and threads trying to determine what our mascot would be. Those were good days. Then it all went to hell. People gotta know when to sage. The death of /new/ made things worse too.

It says in my textbook that cyclohexene is a achiral starting material.

/sci/'s definition of science:
Has math
Not solely memorization

Essentially, we're elitist as fuck and do the most unscientific thing possible by overlooking the vast majority of science thinking that we're better than it or some childish shit.

Also, OP, you better know at least two languages if you major in linguistics or nobody will take you seriously.

Neurofag here

I'm getting ready to graduate this spring. I've got a debt that I think is somewhere in the $20,000-40,000 range (too scared to look at the real number). I want to pay this off before I head to grad school and I also want to get in some more research experience and get another rec letter or two while at it (seeing as how I've only probably got 3 people I can count on for good letters right now).

What sorts of jobs could I get with my B.S. in neuroscience? If it matters my combined GPA is something like 3.78, I come from a top 20 university, I'll be graduating honors (probably highest honors) which means I'll have a thesis, I should have a paper published as a first author by the time I graduate as well, and I've got four years of research behind me. As a downside, most of the research I've done up to this point has been psychological (mostly with rats) although I did do a lot of work with all phases of a Cfos experiment for about a month or two a couple years ago.

I'm kind of hoping that there's more out there for me than $12/hour lab monkey positions.
