Number theory was a bad choice for usless math, look at literally anything in cryptography or CS beyond an introductory course. Category theory is the canonical abstract nonsense, but even that has applications in CS and linguistics. But it doesn't matter because only brainlets are so low IQ and incapable of abstract thought that they need a toy at the end of the day to justify study.

By the way, a lot of stuff that we thought "just werks" ended up not "just werking" when we started trying to justify things rigorously. If you don't believe in logically justifying abstract statements before believing they are true, you're quite literally a retard.
