/sci/ I am a lowly Poli-Sci major and I can't understand some physics, please help.

I understand that mass energy equivalence means that the amount of energy that can be converted from matter is dependent on the mass of that object of matter. When any kind of reaction occurs that releases energy, the mass of the matter involved in the reaction must decrease relative to the energy released.

So when nuclear fusion or fission occurs in a system that is not closed some mass always leaves the system along with energy. E=mc2 can be used to determine how much mass will be added to any other system that absorbs this energy.

So this also means that matter has more mass when it it has more energy. If metal is heated it has more mass. When a ball spins it has more mass.

Along with my understanding of the conservation of mass and energy, this means matter and energy cannot be destroyed, only converted from matter to energy or energy to other forms of energy. Because mass and energy are really the same thing because energy in all its forms has mass, while mass in all its forms has energy.

What I don't understand is this: how can it be possible that energy cannot be converted to matter? I realize this is equivalent to asking why mass cannot be converted to matter, but still. My understanding of this leads me to ask, Where is all the energy that is ever released going to go? When the sun burns it releases light and radiation from fusion reactions of hydrogen turning into heavier elements. But obviously all the energy the sun ever releases is derived from the matter that makes it up. When the sun stops releasing energy it will have less matter than it started with, and all that energy, all that mass will have to enter something else, and add to its mass.

What is the universe destined to do? Convert all matter to energy and then just exist as a huge mass of radiation?

i think i understand the problem, there's a fundamental dichotomy of views

on the /sci/ side, we know to some degree the biological distinctions between sexes, there are quite a few of them and they are very important to both behavior and self-image.

on the /lit/ side (they might not be from /lit/ but the distinction is needed), there's lots of personal anecdotal evidence saying that gender is very fluid and cannot be rigidly defined, and trying to rigidly define them is a very archaic or overly-analytically way of thinking about the world.

the two viewpoints are totally at odds

>yfw current sunspot activity is heading for a serious long term low

>yfw cosmic ray impacts (usually high energy protons) are an indirect progenitor of low altitude clouds

>yfw the generated clouds generally reflect more solar energy and distribute heat around the planet much faster than normal, causing an increase in storms and a slow decline in global temperature

>yfw the sun's heliopause usually deflects these protons to some degree, whereas our magnetic field isn't strong enough to fully deflect them

>yfw earth-bombarding cosmic rays are 19% higher than have ever been recorded

>yfw the last time this happened, it was the Dalton Minimum, and the Thames river froze over

CME (coronal mass ejection)? OG GOD WE'RE ALL GUNNA DI-
oh wait, all you have to do it shut off the power grid for the duration of the CME strike, transformer stations suffer no damage.

also electronics are generally unaffected as long as they;re not on.

so everyone takes a day of no-power and no-electronics. not so bad actually

ALSO ULTRA MEGA PROTIP, TO COMPLETELY PROTECT YOUR ELECTRONICS FROM DAMAGE, PUT THEM IN THE MICROWAVE FOR THE DURATION OF THE CME. no really, your microwave is a really excellent faradae cage, and is EM-silent inside...just don't turn it on....

People usually get pissed online when you use proper grammer, and full fucking stenences. Something about a person expressing themselves online without trying to be funny or expressly concerned about how long they type. I try to fit in, and it seems to work better when I don't try my best. So grammer aside, I should Study more? Thats nothing new to me, I bought a Teachers guide to help me learn all the Math I need, its a great book I wish I had been told to pick it up before I took the first test. I hate that they give you a shitty little 8 page brochure telling you "study this if you can do these questions then you will probably pass the entry test" then you take the test and NOTHING on the test is similar except the fast that there are numbers in front of you and then you FAIL HARD and they look at you like, "well you are the professor who wrote the test, what do YOU think went wrong, why isn't this a 90%, looks like you FAIL TO ME with your little measily 20% score GET OUT OF MY FACE"
GODAMND better than thou souls less shut in book reading worm face cock blocking shit eaters.
