all you need is the position vs. time graph for each of them and figure out where they intercept

first one:
s = 16t - 4.9t^2
put that into a calculator, that shows you the position of the first one at each point in time.

the second one is
s = 16(t - 2) - 4.9(t - 2)^2

graph them both on your calculator, then use the fancy dancy intersection tool to figure out x (or t) and y (or s) where they intercept

I got 2.63 seconds and 8.16 meters

velocity is then simply plug and chug

1st rock: we want velocity after 2.63 seconds so

v = 16 - 9.8(2.63) = -9.774 m/s

2nd rock: we want velocity after 0.63 seconds because the rock doesn't start moving until 2 seconds into the graph, or whatever

v = 16 - 9.8(0.63) = 9.826 m/s

I used the equations s = v0t + 1/2at^2 and v = v0 + at

the first one is exactly like a quadratic function, like y = Ax + Bx^2 so we can use it to make a nice graph. A and B are both constant values, being the initial velocity and the acceleration divided by two, respectively. I put the (t - 2) in for the second one for reasons I'm not quite sure of but I know that's how you do it because I was taught it like that in school.

I believe that the real reason for why we cannot see most of the stars in the sky with our naked eye is because of the decreasing intensity of a source of energy over distance.

If you think of an explosion, say, and you were to imagine the sphere of its shock wave to spread outwards from the source. At first it will be a very small sphere with a lot of energy per unit area of surface. As it expands, the sphere's surface area will increase and the amount of energy per unit area will decrease dramatically. This isn't accounting for other forces that would detract from the power of an explosion, but the idea remains intact.

I think the idea is three spatial dimensions and one temporal dimension

time as a "dimension" works a bit differently than the other three. I think it works best if you imagine time like a line. The whole 3D universe is contained within every point on that line, but each one is an instant later than the one before it.

there's some really cool video that explains the idea of 10 or 11 dimensions or something, starts from the ground up
