There are actually people on /sci/ who claim to be smart and intelligent and live lives based on realism and facts, who force themselves to belive that blacks are just as intelligent as other races/ethnicities. And they do this un-ironically.

Goes to show. No matter how smart you are. You can still be full of shit. Like a Muslim, Jewish, or Christian scientist who believes in their gods 100%

Except us mathematicians though. We only deal in logic and reasoning so we're impervious to shit like that ;)

>This is why I have thus far refused to try attending college- the stress and disappointment from not understanding what I'm being taught, the punishment up front of debt and the punishment throughout the course of failure.

OP, I think that this may be a serious roadblock worth looking into getting past. I was out of school for 2 years after studying foreign languages and now I'm going back for engineering and the only way that I am able to bring myself to such a monumental shift in curriculum is by using the incredibly cheap/free community colleges in California. It's had tons of bumps and I've had plenty of moments that you're going through.

Where do you live? If you live in the US, is there a nearby state that offers free/discount community college to people at your income level? If you are unable to move, is there a community college nearby that will offer to tutor to non-students (sneak-ins)? That way you can still have some guidance in understanding the material.

>How do you understand things when your mind refuses to comprehend?
I get help. No man is an island.

Hello /science/,
I have a quick question about multivariable calculus, if anybody knows this off the top of their head: Is the tangent line to the curve of intersection of two surfaces equal to the line of intersection of the tangent planes to the same two surfaces?

/sci/,

In terms of University degrees (I don't know if it matters but I'm talking about the UK here) what is the difference between a Mathematical Physics degree and a Maths and Physics degree?

Some Uni's offer one, some offer the other. I don't think I've seen a Uni that offers both. I looked at the modules of both and they both seem fairly similar. Are they the same thing? Or am I being silly?

Thanks, /sci/.

Hi /sci/

Have any of you ever been to a "Mathworks Day" or Mathsworks seminar in general?

I just received an email from the engineering department apparently inviting us maths folk down to a such a seminar... Its hard to grasp what exactly the topic is, I believe it comes in two or more parts, one of which being an introductory session on MATLAB (but considering this is a staff seminar that seems unlikely), the other being on global optimization with MATLAB. The second of these topics sounds interesting, but the first sounds trivial to the point that its attendees surely would not be equipped for a seminar on something interesting with MATLAB, given that they have just had an introduction to it.

Is this Engineering setting some kind of trap to get us to attend 'MATLAB for dummies', or is it worth attending?

I have a feeling this post is probably going to irritate many of you but I would be extremely grateful to those who try to help.

I'm 18 and I want to start learning mathematics again. I never really paid attention to my education when I was younger, so my knowledge is basically at school level, think 15-16 year old. Probably less than that now.

Where would you suggest I start? I don't suppose there is some kind of free course or set of ebooks out there that start out very basic and steadily increase in difficulty? I've never really self-learned before so I'm not sure where I should start.

I'm looking at the sticky and downloading some of the books but I'm kind of assuming none of them are going to basic enough for me to be able to understand yet.

And sorry about the unrelated picture.

/sci/borgs, share your studying habits and stuff that helps you get shit done on time.

I kick it in the kitchen, switch on all the lights, have a cup of green tea and focus mainly on writing notes with diagrams and whatnot.

I think it's about time we should learn about ourselves;

The field of science that interests you the most?
Clinical Medicine

What stage of education are you in?
have EMT-I, former IDMT in the USAF, currently a Sophomore going for my degree in Biochemistry.

Do you believe in a god?
I believe in a power greater than myself.

Have you ever played Warhammer/YuGiOh or similar games? If so, what?
Fuck, and no.

Do you play vidya? if so what genres do you enjoy the most?
What the fuck is this shit...I don't even...

What are your parents like?
Father was a marine, said I should of stayed in the military.
Mother middle class, very much out for her best interest, more supportive of my younger sister who's pregant at the age for 20 (i'm 25), than me. Haven't heard from her in 6 months (except for when I called on mothers day).

What kind(s) of music do you enjoy the most?
Rock, Classical, Alternative, some hip-hop (rarely)

Do you play an instrument?
Saxophone when i was in the middle school.

Were you (properly) bullied as a child?
eh probably.

what the fuck is up with these questions: pic fucking related.

Sup faggot. I'm going to assume you don't live in the U.S. so:

>implying that watching House will magically get you into medical school.
>implying anyone that watches House will actually get into medical school since that time could be spent studying.
>implying a "hurr I want to be a doctor" attitude is enough to actually become one and that a fuckload of work isn't involved.

I'm going to go ahead and say that physics majors are the most annoying (and misinformed). If you want proof, look at 95% of this thread. That said, pre-meds can drop dead. Less competition for me.

Pic related, I operate on a whole nuther level.
