This is the deepest diving US sub, Alvin. It has just recetly received a major overhaul so that it can reach 4 miles deep, the depth of most of the abyssal plain.

Cameron's sub made a 5 mile deep test dive just a few days ago.

If you're interested in deep submergence, such as piloting or riding vessels like the Alvin down as far as 4 miles, you'll want to focus on qualifying with the NOAA or the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute as either a submersible pilot or a marine biologist/geologist.

Haha! Oh I know, and I'm not afraid of ghost sharks/chimerafish, just saying they have a cool, creepy look about them typical of deep sea life. It's the ambiance that makes it appealing, the same thrill as a suspenseful horror movie, gliding silently along in your glass bubble looking out at a strange world, like a parallel dimension of darkness and pressure more alien to our experience than space, never knowing when some unknown monstrosity will appear.

I've been thinking about this and I've wondered if the waste heat and light from human activities might attract more life into the vicinity. Maybe get a small fungal forest growing down there or something.

Also, what kind of health-effects does it have, long-term life in the pressures two kilometers down? Have there been any studies or experiments?

It would mean no more Alvin. No more research submersibles capable of reaching the abyssal plain, period. No ability to study hydrothermal vents.
