Quick question for you, /sci/ducks. I know it sounds like a homework question, but stick with me.

Can meiosis be initiated with one cell, or does it need two? (tl;dr after this point)

I got into an argument with my Bio teacher about this. Since meiosis creates sex cells, which are created without sex actually taking place, I contested that it only required one cell.

He informed me that it required two cells because a human needs a sperm and a egg to be created.

"By that definition, mitosis requires two cells!" I objected.

His answer was to read the book. Which makes no goddamn mention of meiosis requiring two cells. I told him to show me where it was in the book, and he told me to read the book.
