Hey /sci/, I'm a math major currently taking a complex analysis course.

Already I'm beginning to see some of the benefits of extending the real numbers to the complex plane. I can see how knowing things for complex numbers can help explain things about real numbers.

However, I was wondering if anyone could explain (simply) why we use complex numbers to represent things in electricity and waves. What is the benefit of using C over R^2?
