particle accelerators are a sad pathetic form of cargo culting. someone made a moderately notable discovery with on in the 1960s, over half a century ago, and ever since, the rest of the idiots have been mimicking the same behavior in hopes of getting lucky with a similar result.
people who play slots aren't stupid enough to use a machine that just payed out big, the people in physics are not quite that bright and they are definitely too dumb to develop any new experimental techniques.
