it literally was the x-33. delta clipper was mcdonnell douglas's entry into the competition alongside venturestar and rockwell's shuttle-looking contraption. there's a bit of an internet circlejerk about how nasa conspired to kill dc-x but there was no point in continuing to fund a testbed for a rocket that was never going to get built after venturestar won.
