How the fuck are you supposed to do research full time without spiraling into NEETdom? I started out very motivated and disciplined for like the first two months, but for every hill I climb over I discover a mountain behind it and it's not clear that all the work I previously did was useful.

In most jobs and teaching, taking courses, you put in effort and get out results proportionate to the effort. It forms a motivating closed loop. Here it's put in a shit ton of effort and get mixed/ no results and just to try more things/ learn more stuff, but it never ends. I don't even see the big picture behind the research that could maybe help with motivation, and so far questions about it have been met with "you'll learn" and "read more". I HAVE been doing that, how long do I have to wait, it's been 6 months now. All attempts to overcome have just been micromanaging diet, gym, sleep and meditation, but eventually I just start giving less and less of a shit until I'm living a glorified NEET life void of all energy.
