Honestly anon the programming is the biggest part. Working on a little "swarm" bot system right now for a home self defense idea.

Control, optimization, communication, behavior of each member of the swam is all CS based.

Especially as an ME all I can imagine you doing is creating a design for what the swarm would look like and the manufacturability of the robots.

You can hand wave it all away if you don't actually have to build and demonstrate them behaving correctly. Swarm robotics is still in its infancy. Researchers have their robots do very basic things like follow the leader, move objects around, flock together, etc.

Basically not an ME thesis in my opinion, very little on the ME side.
