Fractals are neat.

First of all, how much information do you want to get out of the simulation? You obviously can't say "all of it" because there wouldn't be enough information in the parent system to hold it. So you probably want to be able to sample from any point to make a readout right?

It comes down to compression. That is, how much information is required to represent a system. We can use a fractal formula for example, to achieve a compression ratio of infinity to one. Tada. We can't extract infinite information but it represents an infinitely larger system which we can sample.

I bet what you mean though, is a big thing of atoms doing stuff. So, how much can you compress the behavior of atoms? Do you actually need to represent every single atom as a discrete entity or can you say "this is a googleplex atoms of water with fluctuations here, here and here"? You could achieve huge compression ratios.

If you're doing it for the purpose of a The Matrix, then simulation is overkill, an emulation would be just fine, based on what you know about the limitations of the inhabitants.

So if you have creatures that are stuck on their planet for sure with no way to get into the distant universe, you can get away with convincing generalizations, as long as they appear to follow the laws of physics. Is the night sky we see "real" or is it a fudgy simulation? Is all this quantum shit going on all the time or just when we're doing experiments to find it? Most of the day you're not suspiciously watching the world with a magnifying glass so if this is a The Matrix, then it's probably quite power and memory efficient.

Hello /sci/,

This summer I have an opportunity to do a degree at university, but I can't choose which course.
A university considered "elite" has offered me a place on a course that is essentially applied maths, it's all about simulation and modelling mostly in the context of engineering / computer science but is still an actual maths degree. But a university that isn't quite as good has offered me a place on a pure math course which inevitably has a bit of statistics work in it too.

Assuming I don't want to work in finance / statistics / teaching, which would be the better choice?

Fractals.
They are easy to make, very pretty and have mind-bending mathematics (fractional calculus, metric spaces )
