So the fission fragments hit the surrounding nuclei, also imparting kinetic energy to them which ionizes them and they do the same to other nuclei etcetc until we end up with a bunch of ionized atoms/molecules and free electrons which are now slow enough to recombine which produces a fuckload of heat?
