I get where you are coming from anon, and to some extent I agree with what you are saying. Bullying certainly does serve a certain function within maintaining healthy social organizational structures, but I’d argue it is often carried out to excess and becomes ultimately harmful. The problem is that bullying is something that arouses a feeling of gratification and satisfaction in the bullies. It is enjoyable to the bullies and those who spectate as well, they thrive emotionally at the benefit of the victim. Generally speaking, humans are terrible at managing how often they indulge in things that cause pleasure. So the bullies tend to take things too far and bully well beyond the point of it being productive, because it makes them feel good. It’s an addiction, but all the more insidious because the person who suffers the consequences isn’t even the one indulging in the behavior, it is the victims who suffer. I don’t know of any solution that would apply broadly to all circumstances. It is something that must be dealt with on a case to case basis. Expecting bullying to never happen is unrealistic, but it is something a “civilized” group should seek to manage in a healthy way that mitigates the damage caused.
