>why did we go to the Moon?
Two reasons.

1. For science. For the pure sake of knowing more about it. Humans are driven by curiosity. We like to know about ourselves and the world around us. This is a basic psychological need.

2. For social/economical/political reasons. Sure the moon's not a useful resource now, but we might need it later. We don't know what technologies we'll have in the future, what wars there will be, etc. It's best to study and claim all the resources you can get your hands on, and to do it before anyone else has the chance. It's the same reason why we have international disputes over things like a 1km chunk of rock just off the coast of Canada. It might be valuable one day.

We will always have poverty and poor. But by increasing our resources and learning how to use them effectively and efficiently, we can slowly increase everyone's standard of living.
