>And while most scientists I’ve come across acknowledge that ASI would have the ability to send humans to extinction, many also believe that used beneficially, ASI’s abilities could be used to bring individual humans, and the species as a whole, to a second attractor state—species immortality. Bostrom believes species immortality is just as much of an attractor state as species extinction, i.e. if we manage to get there, we’ll be impervious to extinction forever—we’ll have conquered mortality and conquered chance. So even though all species so far have fallen off the balance beam and landed on extinction, Bostrom believes there are two sides to the beam and it’s just that nothing on Earth has been intelligent enough yet to figure out how to fall off on the other side.

>implying humanity won't eventually go extinct like >99% of all other species that have existed
>implying earth won't become unsuited for life in a few billion years
>implying creating superintelligence and becoming posthuman isn't the only way to achieve true species/biosphere immortality

For what? It's a scientific question that is asked here many times every day. How unlikely is it that any species can survive? It's almost improbable to think that humans will not go extinct for one reason or another. I just need to know in advance whether this will happen for very personal reasons that I cannot disclose.

It's hard to say. We could have some sort of purpose outside of the base instinct to survive and propagate or we could also be an example of the amazing freak accident in the Universe sometimes. This is a topic that may be beyond our immediate comprehension. I'm personally n the camp that believes we are at our natural biological peak and our next step in evolution is to integrate with the tools we have created. I would argue that the end game of any species is to evolve enough to develop technology, increasing their influence of the world around them.

The finish line could possibly be the so called "Singularity" where technology grows at a rate that seems infinite. This will do one of two things; destroy the civilization or cause them to ascend to something beyond our comprehension.

I guess we will find out.
