Not a Neal Stephenson reference, Diamond Age is a legitimate term for a nanotechnology age.

This is a sorting pump. The design by Eric Drexler was meant as an update to the imagined "many spoked wheel to ferry atoms from a partition in a tank to the other through a wall".

It sorts atoms by mass and pushes out (Through one of the horseshoe-shaped tubes) and the rest just go through another one.

It looks pretty cool, but it is far, far more complex than I'm comfortable with.

Well, sort of related: This is a preliminary design for a sorting pump made by Eric Drexler and company. It sorts atoms by mass, I believe, so it could be modded for Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide, since the mass of each is quite different.

It would be interesting to make the walls into a molecular sorting pump to get water, then some dissociator, then another pump to filter out Hydrogen and let Oxygen in.
