What exactly is a short circuit, and why does it ruin hardware?

Say I have a coil of wire reading 2ohms. I'm heating it with a 4.25v power source (9w); if I short the coil so it completes the circuit quicker (eg. two loops of the coil touch), besides now being given more current (say it's now 1.5ohm), what is the problem?

If I use a battery that has short protection, what does this even mean?
