Sagan was a pretty hum drum scientist, he did some great things, but so did everyone else. He wasn't tesla or anything. I think what captured people most about him is that unlike the common image of a scientist sagan portrayed a sense of wonder and excitement with this cosmic perspective of his, as well as a deep compassion for others that seems beyond his time.
