They don't spend much time in the atmosphere, but when they do they're just hovering at a standstill to deploy landing craft, so they don't need to be aerodynamic.

Launching an extrasolar ground invasion would be retarded. There's no way you could get enough troops on the ground over those distances to take an entire planet. What you would do is load up a space vessel with nuclear weapons and then send it on its way. Then just let it autonomously wreak havoc.

Pic related is from a conflict between two colonies around Alpha Centauri. Towards the end of the third installment, one of the factions tried doing the strategy above, but the other faction crashed the ship into their planet, which ignited the global petrusite deposits, making the planet uninhabitable.
