They are weakly interacting particles with interaction mediated by the W boson. The W bonsons are vector particles that satisfy SU(2) gauge symmetry. In the original model of QED beta decays experiments yield results which doesn't conform to scattering amplitudes predicted, and higher order diagrams indicate some form of boson loop is missing in order to compensate for the missing amplitude. The gauge symmetry serves to couple the neutrino (which from experimental evidence only interact with left-handed leptons) to electromagnetic interaction. The muon is a lepton heavier than the electron, so neutrinos are more easily seen in collisions involving them.
Electroweak interaction can be achieved by symmetry breaking and having the Goldstone boson "eat up" both the photon and the W bosons.
