It's thought that the amino acids spontaneously formed small polymers, in essence small proteins, which by chance had enzymatic abilities which sped up polymerization. Over time these were eventually trapped inside micelles, which are spheres of fatty acids, forming the most primitive cells.

However, for all this to happen by chances is extremely unlikely, and it's why many people dismiss the theory. Others think that since live took many billion years to evolve its possible for such an unlikely sequence of events to occur.
