the thing with herpes simplex virus (and most other herpes virus) is its ability to remain latent in the body. After initial infection, HSV (usually 1:oral 2 genital) remains dorment and manifests by cold sores during periods of immunological depression. During these episodes the virus can be found in the lesions (the vesicles). Even during these episodes the virus in the blood is very low.

So...tl,dr: you would have to get a sample from a cold sore and infect by a break in the skin.
