Basically you can approximate the length of any curve by selecting a finite number of points that are on the curve, calculating the linear distance between one point and the next, and summing them all up.

Note that all the points MUST be on the curve. The OP cheats by allowing points to be off the curve, which allows you to overestimate the arclength of the curve.
