>As to why Gravity exists, physics doesn't really care about or even try to answer that question. We just care about how it acts.

But that's not true! We do want to know why. We want to examine the underlying causes however elusive they might be.

OP:

Work with Feynman Lectures, they may be not as deep as other, more theoretical Textbooks like Goldstein, Landau etc, but they're written at a very basic level but still have the ability to concieve a quite deep understanding of Physics. The topics you posted are in vol. 1 and 2.
I am quite sure this is what you're looking for.

Pic related, one of the greatest physicists ever.

Science is not meant to produce anything "useful" for the layman, it's supposed to find out more about the world we live in for the sake of knowledge itself.

Sure there are some useful things coming out of science, but that is not it's main goal.

An atom (or so people think, I think it's kind of nutty) is the smallest thing they (think) they can imagine. If you ask someone in the street what a quark or a neutrino or a gluon or whatever is, they wouldn't have the slightest idea.

I think it's kind of stupid tho, since most people can't really imagine how tiny an atom really is.
