The equipment on Curiosity / Mars Science Lab is going to give us a nice fuckload of information about radiation levels to and on Mars. Our knowledge about the effects of radiation on physiology is still in its infancy, I suspect it's not as incredibly harmful as the anti-nuclear people would have you believe but it's something we'll find out more about in coming years.

Death toll at Chernobyl was a bit of a flop and we're still to see the long term effects from Fukushima.
