It's honestly quite simple, the United States Government is an active and malevolent enemy to the United States citizenry, and is doing everything within it's power to annihilate any vestiges of freedom left in the country. That means all economic freedom, freedom to speak, to defend oneself, to move and travel and interact with other people unhindered, all forms of individual sovereignty.
Practical fusion power means an enormous and rapid reduction in the costs (and thus constraints) of electrical power for the average person and for independent industry, practical space travel similarly is the ultimate freedom of movement, the ability to literally leave an entire planet behind if you don't like it but can marshal the resources to get out.

They want us trapped here to become their slaves in perpetuity.
