I felt the same way as you at one point OP. I felt trapped, like I was living my life simply to not let my parents down, and the goals I was pursuing were simply because I was being told I needed to pursue them.

I realized i felt like this because I had never made a decision in my life for myself, only in response to the pressures surrounded me from my family and societal expectations in general.

So after my gf of 3 years broke it off when I was 20, I took a year off college and took about 3k out of my savings, told my parents I loved them and appreciated what they have done for me and proceeded to back pack across southeast Asia for 2 and a half months. It was most definetly the best decision I have ever made.

I'm back in college now, but every year I travel to another country where I spend 1-2 months backpacking across it, or as much as i can, to remind myself that there is so much more to life than jobs and societal status.

I understand how you feel OP.

I didn't pay attention in math when I was in school, now I have a strong desire to learn. I'm going to the library today, any books I should get? I pretty much just know how to add subtract and multiply.

Carl Sagan for promoting science is for the masses, not just the elite.

Maybe he overestimated humanity, but god damn he tried.

Say a graph has chromatic number k, then does there have to exist a path of length k in G, such that each vertex on the path has a different color?

I think it is true, but if it isn't I'm struggling to find a counter example.

Any ideas?

in return, Sagan

Carl Sagan (1934-1996) was a professor of astronomy at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, who became a celebrity on television and a vocal advocate for increased searches for intelligent life in outer space. In addition, Carl Sagan was an atheist.[1] Time magazine reported that Carl Sagan "talked with Jimmy Carter about such esoteric matters as black holes and exobiology (the speculation that extraterrestrial life exist)."[2] He was instrumental in the development of Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence(SETI) which has cost American taxpayers money with no real prospects of any return. The speculative field of exobiology often assumes that evolution occurred despite the lack of evidence and counter evidential nature of evolutionary claims.

Carl Sagan was also an avid marijuana smoker who claimed marijuana gave him scientific insights.[3] Sagan's avid pot smoking and atheism no doubt inspired Sagan's atheistic pseudoscience fantasies that he foisted on his gullible fans. For example, Sagan alleged that evolution was a "fact".[4] In addition, as noted earlier Sagan advocated the boondoggle of taxpayer funded exobiology research. Given that many atheists embraced communism and continue to hold the spurious notion of abiogenesis, it is not surprising that many atheists embraced Sagan's pseudoscience (see also: Causes of atheism). The Barna Group found concerning atheism and morality that those who hold to the worldviews of atheism or agnosticism in America were more likely, than theists in America, to look upon the following behaviors as morally acceptable: illegal drug use; excessive drinking; sexual relationships outside of marriage; abortion; cohabitating with someone of opposite sex outside of marriage; obscene language; gambling; pornography and obscene sexual behavior; and engaging in homosexuality/ bisexuality.[5]

After the recent space exploration thread i decided to make a thread dedicated to carl sagan and my favourite thing in the universe, which happens to be his series: Cosmos.

If anybody wants to tell about the first time they saw those series you are more than welcome to.

(oh and btw link to his series on megavideo: http://quicksilverscreen.com/videos?c=44&pt=list))
