It's like spending your savings. E.g. if you inherited a forest from your grandfathers and cut wood faster then trees can grow back you don't run out of wood the next day. But in a decade you run out of trees big enough to cut down and sell. So you need to sell your land for cheap and end up with nothing.
That's what we do on a global scale.

Actually most damage to climate is done by cutting down trees, humans do this at an alarming rate. To save climate we need to stop mining coal, stop mining tar sand, and start a massive reforestation program.
