Yes, at the moment we live in a society which resembles more huxley's vision than orwell's, but don't you think that once those in power have the means to control everything, they will try to control everything?
We have CCTV in almost every 1st world country, not to mention satelites which can monitor any given location.
Today it's impossible to keep monitoring every CCTV camera, but once we have the computational capacity to do so, I think we will.

I agree, I don't think the pope is stupid. Because keeping as many sheeps under his control while being at the most powerful position he can get, it's not something you're random Jerry Springer guest would do. The example is poorly chosen and I think the pope, even though he is for me maintaining the bane of humanity that has been religion, an intelligent guy. He has power, wealth and fame.
