The real tandem mirror machine, for reference. Not a plasma doctor but from my limited brainlet understanding it basically slams two jets of plasma head-on into one-another and then simultaneously fires a score of neutron beams into that center region, initiating fusion. The very uniquely shaped looping electromagnets are plasma mirrors meant to bounce cooling plasma coming from the core back into the region of fusion, however this was insufficient and eventually lead to the later Tokomak doughnut design and then Stellarator helical design.
