I find math to be a pretty shitty example of critical thinking skills and especially spatial reasoning. Unless we're talking about geometry, math has jack shit to do with spatial reasoning, and even that isn't physically applicable. Mathematics is literally nothing but number crunching. There is no ulterior motive to math, you take everything at face value and plug variables into equations.

To me, reading would be a much better example of improving critical thinking skills.

Mathematics beyond the 8th grade is almost completely useless unless you enroll in a mathematics-oriented major, which most people don't. Advanced algebra, calculus, trigonometry, and most of geometry is completely disparate and inapplicable to everyday life.

Mathematics is a fantastic field and critical to our society being so advanced, I'm not arguing that. But if kids could learn a useful, applicable skill skill such as advanced resuscitation abilities or self defense, they'd be served so much fucking better. Especially self defense.
