Here's a question for you, /sci/entists. Or, rather, mathematicians.

Okay, so I love mathematics, right? Very cool, very beautiful and all that jazz, but answer me this:

What will a degree in mathematics get you? More specifically, what does it entail? What kind of work will you do? Normally, when I think of math, I think of it applied to things like engineering and physics, not it as a field of applicable research (lol wat iz applied mathematics).

I hear stories of master's degrees in mathematics getting people loads of money and tons of jobs, but what happens in those jobs?

TL;DR: What does a mathematician (a person with a DEGREE in mathematics) do?
