For you, I must make reference to the definition of algebra: the study of mathematical symbols and the rules for manipulating them. Whether or not you think infinity hat has the absorptive property, the rule for the hat infinity is that one must not execute the absorptive operation. This is like the familiar standard under which one must not factor out 2πi from the complex exponential (pic). It just messes things up if you simplify too early. The hat makes an "algebraic" rule about that for numbers in the neighborhood of infinity.
