I support wholeheartedly a program to put a human being, unprotected by any pressure hull, on the abyssal plain 4 miles down. It would require extensive surgical modification but I believe it can be done.

At some point in the near future it will become possible for a human being, perhaps surgically modified, to walk on the true ocean floor between 2 and 4 miles down. He might be wearing a suit filled with breathable liquid called 'oxygenated fluorocarbons'. He might have one natural lung and one artificial one that extracts oxygen from sea water. Perhaps implants in his body fill every air cavity with incompressible saline fluid before he exits the airlock of his descent vehicle.

Would the impact of witnessing a human being walking on the abyssal plain or even the bottom of the challenger deep unprotected by a pressure vessel be equal to that of seeing man walk on the moon? Would it be a better use of money than sending a new scientific expedition to the moon? Is it worth the expense, and what would your reaction to witnessing such an event be?
