Falcon Heavy achieves a much lower launch cost. It hasn't been built yet.

Proton Rocket isn't human rated. SpaceX has designed their vehicles to be human rated. SpaceX hasn't been making rockets for years and yet they still have a pretty cheap launch cost.

What the shuttle legacy pork sausage that even starving NASA doesn't want to eat? The Space Launch System is what you get when you grind the worst aspects of the Space Shuttle in with congressional pork, wrap it in a seemingly appetizing casing of heavy lift hubbub and force it down NASA's throat.

The whole idea of using a certain percentage of "congress mandated" Shuttle legacy components is all about keeping the pork flowing down to constituents who don't want to lose shuttle jobs. Ain't any cost benefit to using old shuttle components that were obsolete years a go.

Not only that, they don't even expect to launch the damn thing until 2017.

That SpaceX heavy lifter can't come soon enough...
