If you do well in STEM it often means as a researcher. And it is really, really badly paid. As a post doc RA your contracts are typically 2-3 years in duration and you need 2-4 of these before you get tenure. Meanwhile you live in poverty and women will not touch you with a barge pole. One of my colleagues lived for a while under his desk to save money until he could move into a hovel. In my time I used my entire post doc salary on food, rent (lived cheaply with a relative), and travel expenses plus paying down student loans.

After that I had nothing.

A lot of companies have credit checking facilities such as account with Dun and Bradstreet. Passwords are typically on a yellow sticker near the screen. Just copy it and type away while in a untracable IP number from a Starbucks.
