If you do well in STEM it often means as a researcher. And it is really, really badly paid. As a post doc RA your contracts are typically 2-3 years in duration and you need 2-4 of these before you get tenure. Meanwhile you live in poverty and women will not touch you with a barge pole. One of my colleagues lived for a while under his desk to save money until he could move into a hovel.
